Design behind the scenes – Studios open during BDW

2025.10.14.

Budapest Design Week will again focus on open studios, workshops and showrooms. These are an excellent opportunity for visitors to get up close and personal with local designers, contemporary design processes, technological innovations and the inspirations behind unique garments and objects.

On 9 October, Dessin Design Agency’s award-winning showroom opened its doors to the public. Guided by Judit Boros and Sarolta Gábor, visitors could experience the world of sustainable material use and experimental surface design on an interactive voyage of discovery. One of the most exciting elements of the presentation was an experimental project that explored the relationship between artificial intelligence and physical space, and gave a vivid insight into the studio’s research-based design approach.

Also on 9 October, Zippsafe Hungary opened its presentation of its smart locker technology to the public. During the exclusive presentation, visitors were given an overview of the development process of the Smart Soft Locker, the logic behind the design decisions and the product’s form and material solutions – followed by a light, informal discussion.

The three-day Designer Walk in Margaret Quarter took place between 9 and 11 October, with thirteen studios, workshops and shops opening their doors at the initiative of the MUMU Workshop Museum. Participants were able to roam around the venues with the help of a map game, collect stamps, buy at a discount and meet designers in person, and attend sustainability-focused information sessions.

On 12 October, the Something Productive Open Day gave visitors the opportunity to experience first-hand the dynamics, techniques and creators of a working workshop. From screen printing to ceramics and book art, participants had the chance to try their hand at a range of activities and meet artists such as CERAMATE Studio, Eszti Kondász and RisoPlant. The event was also accompanied by a comprehensive exhibition and fair.

On 14 October, BuildEXT’s Digital Architecture Meetup will present the latest developments in digitalisation in the construction industry, where visitors will be able to explore the application of a BIM-based approach, the benefits of data-driven design, and the role of artificial intelligence and mixed reality tools in the design and operation processes through practical examples.

Between 15 and 17 October, the Bártfai-Horváth Architecture Workshop will be open to visitors on three consecutive afternoons. During the open studio programme, participants will be able to get an insight into the different phases of the design process, as well as the firm’s work, its way of thinking and its relationship to different scales. The events will be accompanied by mocktails and informal discussions, making the professional topics accessible in a people-oriented way.

On 19 October, a special design discussion will take place in the renewed showrooms of the JAB Villa, where five female designers will tell the story of their joint transformation of space. The event will give visitors the opportunity to meet the creatives responsible for the interior renewal in person, as well as learn about the brand’s world, its values and the inspirational process that led to the reimagining of the characterful showroom.
