Felted Leather Workshop – Making a Unique Necklace With Felt Balls and Leather Beads

Location:

Budapest, Pasaréti Közösségi Ház – 1026 Budapest, Pasaréti út 102.

Dates

2025.10.12 15:00 - 19:00

In this workshop, visitors will become familiar with the materials, tools, and basic techniques of felting and leatherworking. Using simple hand tools and traditional craft methods, participants will create finely crafted, high-quality decorative objects that fit seamlessly into contemporary material culture. First, merino wool tops will be used to make felt beads with the wet-felting technique: one bead will be decorated with silk thread, while another will be embroidered with metallic thread after felting. The leather beads are created in the style of traditional leather buttons: cut from leather into elongated triangles, finished with folded edges, twisted, and secured by threading back the narrow end. Finally, the completed felt beads and leather beads are strung onto a thin, cylindrical leather cord.

About the Organiser:
Leatherworker Veronika Somos and felt artist Edina Halmai, both folk applied artists, have been experimenting with the combination of felt and leather for many years. The fine fibres and bright colours of felted wool harmonise with the organic surface of real leather, enhancing each other’s character. The creators aim to work with simple, elegant solutions, allowing the natural beauty of the materials to prevail. By incorporating traditional motifs or techniques, they create modern, fashionable objects. Their work is defined by high-quality raw materials, meticulous craftsmanship, deep knowledge and use of ancient traditions, and a sensitivity to contemporary material culture.
