Slow Design in the Time of Miksa Róth – Thematic Guided Tour

Location:

Budapest, 1078 Budapest, Nefelejcs utca 26.

Dates

2025.10.18 11:00 - 12:00

The now fashionable slow design movement seeks to achieve a state that was natural in Miksa Róth’s time. Back then, mass production did not define everyday life since most objects were handmade: one had to wait for clothes, furniture, or even stained glass windows. For us today, craftsmanship has become synonymous with luxury, just as slowing down has become a rare privilege in our accelerated world. How did this slowing down look in Róth’s time, when global mass production did not yet exist – and what can we learn from all this today, as we must once again relearn the mindset of sustainability? The programme will be led by Luca Ujvári-Zsiga, an intern at the museum.

About the Organiser:
The Miksa Róth Memorial House and Collection operates on Nefelejcs Street in the 7th district, in the former home of world-renowned mosaic and stained glass artist Miksa Róth. The museum’s rich collection preserves numerous beautiful works from Róth’s workshop, showcasing his impressive technical and material innovations, as well as masterpieces of the applied arts from Historicism, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. On the first floor, the memorial apartment offers visitors a true journey back in time: the exhibition not only tells the story of the Róth family but also provides insight into lifestyle and everyday life. The rooms furnished with period furniture take visitors back into the colourful past of a brilliant master, a family of troubled fate, and a twentieth-century life story.
