“When does a letter stop being a letter? – Boundaries and Their Blurring in the Art of Letter Design” is FONTFRONT’s Warmup informal professional symposium exploring the boundaries of type design. The central question of the discussion is: how far can a form be considered a letter, where does the boundary between typography and visual art lie, and does it still make sense to speak of boundaries? Participants include FONTFRONT competition jurors, former contestants, and invited experts, who share their experiences based on recent submissions and international trends. The goal is not to seek final answers but to raise good questions and foster an inspiring discourse on the changes and future of contemporary typography. Following the discussion, there is an opportunity for networking at Kastner Kommunity.

About the Organiser:
FONTFRONT is one of the most successful typography competitions in Hungarian graphic design, revitalising the national professional scene since 2023. It aims to create a meeting platform for the graphic design community, activate its participants, and showcase the autonomous and creative potential within Hungarian graphic design uniquely. The competition traces its roots to the early 2010s, originally based on the redesign and visual rethinking of Latin alphabet letters in a duel format, with two creators working on each letter. This is how the “letter battles” are created, on which the audience can vote online. Entrants are selected for the programme by a distinguished professional jury. Through the competition, associated exhibitions, and professional programmes, a real and active professional community has been built, highlighting not only the diversity of Hungarian graphic design but also the creativity of related fields.
