Modernism, Reimagined Workshop

Location:

Budapest, Walter Rózsi-villa – 1071 Budapest, Bajza u. 10.

Dates

2025.10.12 14:00 - 18:00

Join this workshop to build modernist birdhouses inspired by Marcel Breuer’s Cape Cod house. The studio, guided by designers Blanka Timári and Balázs Kisgyörgy (MAIII collective, whatsit_studio), is inspired by the Breuer Collection of the Museum of Architecture, supporting both professional execution and individual design choices.

Iconic shapes, signature colours, and creative details – bring modernism into your own garden and get ready for the bird-feeding season!

Breuer’s Cape Cod holiday home is a prime example of his clean, nature-integrated architectural style. The building was threatened with demolition until recently, when a fundraising campaign was launched for its preservation and renovation. The campaign was supported by the MÉM MDK. In 2025, our institution acquired a photographic collection documenting the family’s legendary summers spent with prominent artists of the era, along with some surviving furniture and objects from the house.

The programme is realised with the support of JAF Holz Hungary and FabLab Budapest.

About the Organiser:
The Walter Rózsi Villa is the first independent exhibition venue of the Hungarian Museum of Architecture and the Monument Protection Documentation Centre (MÉM MDK). The modernist luxury villa, built in 1936, is remarkable not only for the institution: until now, Hungary has had no publicly accessible building that represents the popular modernist period between the two world wars.
The villa was built in 1936 for opera singer Walter Rózsi and her family, based on designs by architect József Fischer and structural engineer Eszter Pécsi. It was deprivatised in 1949 and was subsequently used by the hospital of the Ministry of the Interior for the next sixty years. Its renovation and conversion into an exhibition space were carried out between 2020 and 2022 with funding from the Hungarian Academy of Arts.

Since May 2022, the Walter Rózsi Villa has been welcoming visitors as the first permanent exhibition venue of the Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Monument Protection Documentation Centre.
